What I learned from building my first website.

Throwback to Josie sitting at the dining table, hunched over a laptop, coffee in hand. Taking my first look at Squarespace and wondering how the heck I was going to build out a website/blog on the platform. I dove in and spent HOURS dragging, clicking, and googling my way around building out my first website. With that first website I STRUGGLED with not being able to bring the concepts in my head to life. I could envision these fabulous features I wanted on my site, but with my lack of knowledge in coding I could only do the basic features Squarespace offered (which is still a lot, but not what I was going for). I continued to build out basic Squarespace websites for friends and local businesses. Soon I began to discover what I could do with code and began googling code snippets (this took hourssss of time). This was when I decided to take the dive into learning website development (aka code). I enrolled in a plethora of courses - college courses, online programs, Squarespace specific courses, and more. I continued incorporating what I was learning into my website builds, and after hours on hours of practice I developed the capability to turn my creative visions into actual features within websites. If you are lost by what I mean by coded features you can take a look at the MENU on sablecoffee.com to get an idea. These are features of a website that are not easily added by just anyone and must be built in by using CSS, HTML, and Javascript (all languages of code).

So years later what I still can take from my first ever website was that coding knowledge is CRUCIAL in being able to build out the site of your dreams. Wether it be learning to code yourself or hiring out a developer the invest into either will be beneficial in the end.

Josie Hiivala

Hi there! My name is Josie, I am a mom of 2 toddlers living in the mountains of Montana, who codes and designs websites in her free time. I absolutely love the challenge of trying to make someones dreams a reality when it comes to their virtual storefront. So I hope we have the opportunity to work together + challenge each other in the future!
